EAA Chapter 563

The Beacon

April, 2025

Chapter

The next chapter meeting is this coming Saturday following breakfast in the hangar.

VMC and IMC Clubs

Both clubs meet this month on their usual dates. The VMC Club meets this Sunday at 6:30, and the IMC Club meets the following Sunday at 6:00.

The IMC Club invites chapter members to attend their meeting and listen to Dr Nick Reinhart discuss aviation medicals. He keeps an office here at 3MY.

Web Site

A password manager used by a chapter member reported the password for the Members section of the previous chapter web site was exposed via a data leak. The current site uses the same password, so as a precaution the password has recently been changed. The new password is posted on the bulletin board of the chapter hangar, or you can contact the web site's editor.

From Headquarters

HQ is requesting volunteers for the work parties to prepare the grounds for OSH.

Youth Programs

High School Flight Clubs

Julian Sturm has started a Flight Club at his high school, Notre Dame. He's this year's Ray scholarship recipient and is working on the Cruzer build.

Ray Scholarship

Due to weather, Julian had to postpone his check ride, and his next chance comes April 13th.

HQ has granted our chapter another Ray scholarship for 2025, and the search for new candidates has begun.

Airplane Building

On the Zenith Cruzer project, the tailplane is complete although the gap seal on the leading corner of the fin needs to be redone. All antennas have been mounted, and the avionics shelf is finished. The factory cannot currently supply seat coverings, so a local upholstery shop is looking at the problem. Wiring the avionics and antennas is the next big task.

Hangar

Tim Threw's engine rebuild has opened yet another chapter—more next month. Also, he's decided to rent a space in the chapter's heated hangar to be used in conjunction with his current hangar, sort of a winter home and summer home arrangement. His space might be available at times in the warmer months, so contact him if you need a temporary work spot.

Members

A number of members have yet to send in their dues for 2025.

On Saturday March 8, Stephanie Williams spoke at the Women in Aviation event sponsored by the Fondulac Library:

I showed up and talked to several kids and their adults about being a mechanic and how cool airplanes are. We had a pretty good question and answer session. The kids got to make paper airplanes (and throw them around the library so they had fun with that), and they got specially made pins and an Amelia Earhart doll.

Airplane for Sale

Al Jennings recently bought a quarter share in a straight tail Cessna 172 kept at 3MY. It's hangared a few doors north of the EAA hangar, facing the runway. It's the one in a 1950s paint scheme. Sadly, he soon discovered insuring someone his age in an airplane partnership was prohibitively expensive, and he is selling. His sheet:

An Illinois Corporation

The aircraft is a CESSNA 172A hangared and kept at 3MY.

There are four members in the Corporation that share the flying and cost of the aircraft. It is an excellent flying and maintained plane.

Yeoman's Cessna 195

In late March, Dave Yeoman flew his gorgeous 1952 Cessna 195 from its home at DVN down to 3MY in order to visit a car dealership. The previous owner had in the 1990s brought this 195 up to its current standard, earning him a Lindy at Oshkosh. With its updates, his Jacobs is rated at 300 hp. Details include a burl veneer panel:
