EAA Chapter 563 News

July 2017

Chapter

Jeff Meyer, the chapter VP, has moved to downtown Chicago for a new job. He'll continue to serve his post, more or less, for the remainder of this term.

Youth Programs

While several donations have been received this year, none have been made to support our Youth Programs, including the Lincoln Land Community College scholarship for aircraft mechanics in training. Please consider a donation. Correction: In the last newsletter it was noted Terri Brandt brought a number of kids from the school in which she teaches. I'd mentioned the school was Quest, but she now teaches at Dunlap.

Treasury

Asset values are stable. Income and expenses are in balance. There have been about $800 in donations with no earmarks. The investment committee recommended moving money which has accumulated in the money market to a Vanguard fund with international exposure, their VHGEX fund in particular, which is about half US and half overseas. This would leave us with about 70% in longer term investments and 30% in near cash investments. The Board approved this at their June meeting.

IMC Club

Just a reminder: The meetings are now at 6 in the evening on the second Sunday of each month. At the last meeting was a review of 91.167, 91.169, and 91.175. A flight plan from KPIA-KMLI was built along with an alternate according to the FARs. This entailed a lively discussion. A challenge to instrument rated pilots was issued to plan and fly an IFR flight to CTK, and there will be a forum for each person to discuss their IFR flights.

Donations

Morrie Caudill has donated a homemade 54 inch propeller. This is a wall decoration; it was not made for flight. He also donated a stick welder and a winch to pull airplanes into a hangar. You can see these in the hangar, and they will be sold to the highest bidder.

National

For those who enjoy watching WW-II aircraft in the air, there will a seldom seen fighter there this year. Two examples of the P-47 will be in attendance.

Volunteers

We need kitchen help for the breakfasts in July and August. You can use the sign up sheet in the hangar or drop a line to the chapter e-mail account.

Members

Welcome new member Bob Pegg. He offers this brief biography:
I was born in Peoria, youngest of 8. I knew I was hooked the first time I looked up and saw an airplane, in fact my first word was airplane! It wasn't until I was 40 I received my private pilots certificate. My instructor was Larry Bernard, and as you can imagine that was quite the experience in itself. On my bucket list is building an experimental aircraft—always loved the P-51. My wife has pushed me towards my interest in flying; my two sons on the other hand worry about me. My work includes managing commercial real estate, and I am self employed in neuro diagnostics and heading towards retirement. I look forward to getting involved with the EAA and helping out any way I can.
He'll be working the first breakfast in July. Greg LePine's half scale F4U was written up in the July issue of the Replica Fighters magazine.

Airport

3MY

The Airport Authority is hoping to have a quarterly event such as the fish fry held this May. Ideas are welcome. Bids are in for the design phase of the repaving of the rest of the area around the hangars and aircraft parking. The design bid will be let and then the bids for the actual paving will be taken. The budget for the project is approximately $400,000 split between design and paving. This is proceeding slowly due to the state budget crisis and FAA authorization bill. There is a need for obstruction lighting on some of the buildings on and surrounding the airport. A land swap with the park district will be needed to acquire the needed land for the long term development plan for 3MY. Trees adjacent to the airport which are in the obstruction free zone are to be cut or pruned. Most of these are at the north end and along the trailer park. While easements give the airport authority the right to do this at any time, they are trying to coordinate it with the trailer park tenants in order to be good neighbors.

Pekin

The Wings and Wheels event was well attended. Steve Kensinger from Sunshine Fabrications is available to do welding, including aluminum. At the airport, he works with Nick Keith, and you can reach them at 648-8100. He recently did the fuel tank for Greg LePine's F4U.

Havana

The Astronomy Night Fly-In brought 13 aircraft to stay the night and watch the stars through strong telescopes provided by the University of Illinois astronomy club. In the morning was the EAA fly-in breakfast. Both the demo flights and the Young Eagles flights were very well attended.

C75

The Father's Day Fly-in set a record for number of breakfasts served, over 1500. A good selection of airplanes was on hand. Some knucklehead provided a low level aerobatics demonstration in his Yak, right at pattern altitude over the shorter runway.
